Gipping Construction – Muntons Maltings, Stowmarket

May 20, '25

Located in Stowmarket, Suffolk, this commercial scaffold project was delivered for Gipping Construction as part of a wider demolition and repair programme at the Muntons Maltings site. CJB Scaffolding was tasked with providing safe and stable access to the elevations of a water tower, which required working at height over delicate asbestos roofing. The scaffold spanned approximately 10 metres on each elevation at a height of 12 metres, and included gantry protection over public walkways.

Project Overview

This specialist access solution involved the design and erection of a beamed scaffold system, carefully engineered to span fragile asbestos roofs without imposing direct loads. The scaffold enabled safe working access to all sides of a 12m-high water tower, supporting both structural repairs and partial demolition works.

Due to the site’s complexity and proximity to pedestrian routes, a gantry scaffold was installed to protect the public walkway below. In addition, debris netting was used to contain any material during demolition, safeguarding both the workforce and surrounding areas.

The project remains ongoing, with the scaffold being progressively dismantled as sections of the tower are removed.

Scope of Works

  • Full scaffold design tailored to site conditions and asbestos risks

  • Beamed scaffold structure spanning asbestos roofing

  • Erection of gantry scaffold for public walkway protection

  • Debris netting for containment during demolition

  • Regular scaffold inspections and compliance checks

  • Ongoing dismantle as demolition progresses

Challenges & Solutions

  • Asbestos roofing required zero-contact scaffold design, using beam spans to safely transfer loads

  • Working around active public walkways necessitated gantry protection and strict safety protocols

  • Scaffold had to adapt to phased demolition schedule with flexibility in dismantling

Results & Benefits

  • Enabled safe and continuous access to high-level demolition zones

  • Delivered with full consideration for asbestos management and structural integrity

  • Maintained public safety through protected walkways and controlled site access

  • Supported a phased approach to partial demolition without delays
